Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has told The Northern Echo that he thinks his father Brian would have enjoyed last night’s game against Sunderland.

The Brewers travelled up to Wearside to take on the promotion-chasing Black Cats, having done them a favour over the weekend by beating Barnsley.

That aided Sunderland’s push for automatic promotion, but a Tom Flanagan own goal – against his former club – put Burton in front at the Stadium of Light.

Flanagan’s defensive partner Jack Baldwin bailed him out with the equaliser, but neither side could find the winner as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

It wasn’t for the want of trying though. The two sides combined for 23 shots on goal and 11 on target, but just couldn’t find that killer moment to claim all three points.

Sunderland have gone ahead of Barnsley and still have a game in hand, but Tuesday’s draw will feel like something of a missed opportunity for Jack Ross and co.

After the game, Burton boss Clough admitted his legendary father Brian – a former Sunderland goal machine – would have loved the game, but would have claimed he’d have scored four goals in a game full of chances.

“It was a good draw for both teams. I don’t think either deserved to lose,” said Clough. “The only mystery was there was only two goals, it could have been 4-4. I was just talking to one of the gentlemen in there and he said ‘I still remember your dad playing’ and he said how much he would have loved that game. And he would have loved it as well.”

“But do you know what my dad would have said? That he would have scored four in that game with the amount of chances the two teams created – and he would have scored four as well!”
