Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough has told BBC Sport that Leeds United are promotion contenders.

Clough gave his verdict on Leeds following Burton’s 5-0 hammering at the hands of the Whites at Elland Road at the weekend.

The performance of the West Yorkshire outfit on Saturday afternoon was arguably their best so far this season.

“It’s not nice when you lose 5-0 but you have to hold your hands up sometimes and say the opposition were excellent,” Clough told BBC Sport.

”Leeds’ movement and the quality of their finishing was top-class. If they play like that, they’re genuine promotion contenders.”

Leeds have made a great start to the 2017-18 Championship campaign and are second in the table at the moment.

Thomas Christiansen’s side are playing good football and are playing without fear.

Chris Wood’s departure to Burnley in the Premier League in the summer transfer window does not seem to have affected Leeds at all.

Defensively, too, the Whites look very solid and efficient, and the Elland Road faithful must be loving it at the moment.

However, it is important to underline the fact that it is still very early in the season, and that there will come a period when Leeds will struggle.

What is good about the opening weeks of the season is that Leeds are putting points in the bank, and this could come in handy during a bad spell.
