Felix Wiedwald has come in for plenty of criticism since arriving at Leeds United in the summer.

Hull's head coach Nigel Adkins looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Hull City and Brentford at KCOM Stadium on December 9, 2017 in Hull, England.

Nigel Adkins has suggested to Hull’s official website ahead of Leeds’ visit to the KCOM Stadium on Tuesday that Felix Wiedwald was the reason that the Tigers were denied a point that he felt that they deserved when they travelled to Elland Road back in December.

The two sides met at Leeds’ ground in their final games before Christmas. And despite Thomas Christiansen’s men battling among the play-off places while Hull have been looking to keep their heads above water in the Championship, it was a very close game decided by one mistake and one piece of sheer brilliance.

A poor clearance from Allan McGregor allowed Pablo Hernandez to run through on goal, and rather than try and drill an effort into the net, the Spaniard showed every ounce of flair up his sleeve by lobbing the Hull goalkeeper with a delicious chip just before the half-hour mark.

But Leeds were also grateful to Wiedwald on the day as he made a handful of brilliant stops to keep the visitors at bay. And ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, Adkins picked out the German’s performance as a real difference-maker.

Leeds goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald reacts during the Sky Bet Championship match between Cardiff City and Leeds United at Cardiff City Stadium on September 26, 2017 in Cardiff, Wales.

“I thought we did really well at Elland Road when we played them a couple of weeks ago and deserved something for our efforts that day,” he told the club’s official website.

“We had a lot of attempts on goal in that game but came up against a goalkeeper in good form.”

While Wiedwald has endured a fairly difficult time since arriving at Leeds in the summer, his performances since he came back into the side towards the end of November have generally looked a lot better, and, barring one glaring howler in the win over Queens Park Rangers and a questionable save at Birmingham that led to the winning goal, there have not been too many occasions where the 27-year-old’s actions have been criticised.

And with Leeds looking to end a run of four defeats in five when they travel to face Hull tomorrow, Wiedwald will be hoping that if he is called upon, he can ensure that he is able to frustrate Adkins once again.
