Leeds United were in the market for a new striker over the summer, and a host of different names were linked.

In the end, Leeds signed Spanish international Rodrigo from Valencia, with his added versatility as a number 10 appealing to Marcelo Bielsa.

One of the other names linked with Leeds was Nicolas Gonzalez, with Marcelo Bielsa seemingly keen to sign his fellow Argentinian.

The Guardian reported in August that Leeds were in talks with Stuttgart over a deal to sign Gonzalez, which would have cost at least £15million.

Brighton wanted him too after a 14-goal campaign last season, but neither side could get a deal done, with Leeds signing Rodrigo mere days later.

Gonzalez has scored twice in four games for Stuttgart this season, but his real success has now come with Argentina.

The 22-year-old scored his first goal for Argentina in the 1-1 draw with Paraguay last week, and then made it two in two with another strike against Peru last night.

Gonzalez has been featuring on the left flank for Lionel Scaloni’s side, and now appears to have made that position his own.

With two goals in two games, Gonzalez’s stock is rising – and Leeds should certainly keep tabs on his progress this season as he begins to star alongside Lionel Messi for Argentina.
