Former Leeds United sporting director Nicola Salerno has thanked fans for continuing to recognise his work at the club.

Salerno left the club in 2015, and after a season at Watford he is back working in Italy with Palermo.

Massimo Cellino’s former lieutenant had more misses at Leeds than hits, with too much focus paid to signing players from Italy who had mixed success adapting to the Championship.

Last night seemingly out of the blue, he sent a message to fans on Twitter.

There was one message on Twitter posted less than 24 hours earlier by a supporter thanking him for bringing the excellent Gaetano Berardi to the club.

It is easy to make a case that Berardi is the best of the many players Salerno signed for Leeds, with the defender an essential utility player for the club, deputising effectively at left-back for Charlie Taylor in recent weeks.

Souleymane Doukara and Marco Silvestri remain at the club although neither are regular starters, while Sol Bamba and Mirco Antenucci moved on last year.

Just don’t mention Zan Benedicic, Granddi Ngoyi or Edgar Cani.

Still it must be nice for Salerno to hear thanks for getting at least one very right two years on, and for all the misses, there is no denying Berardi has been a huge success for the Whites.
