It has been almost a decade since Nico Rosberg stunned the Formula 1 world by announcing his retirement just days after winning the 2016 world championship. Having finally dethroned Lewis Hamilton and delivered Mercedes another drivers’ title, Rosberg chose to walk away at the absolute summit of the sport — a decision that still divides fans today.

Mercedes were left scrambling for a replacement ahead of the following season after losing the man who had led their championship charge and spent seven years with the team. Rosberg, meanwhile, transitioned into broadcasting, where he remains a popular analyst and regular presence around the paddock.

Speaking on Sky Sports F1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Rosberg reflected on the reaction to his departure and acknowledged why so many people struggled to accept it.

“Everybody does it his own way,” Rosberg explained. “For me, it just felt like I was at the top, and I wanted to go out on the top, and it just felt like a beautiful moment to do so, after a long career. For me personally, that was really the right thing. I know a lot of people were disappointed because it was such a great battle at the time.”

His rivalry with Hamilton had reached its most intense point in 2016, with both drivers pushing themselves and the team to their absolute limits. Rosberg later admitted that the pressure of that fight had been overwhelming at times, even recalling how he once feared his own mechanics were working against him — a situation that prompted team principal Toto Wolff to reshuffle personnel in order to preserve fairness.

How Rosberg executed the perfect championship campaign

Looking back, Rosberg’s 2016 campaign stands as a masterclass in championship management. He stormed through the opening races of the season, built a critical points cushion, and then did exactly what was required in the closing rounds.

Despite finishing second in each of the final four races, including the dramatic Abu Dhabi finale where Hamilton attempted to back him into traffic, Rosberg’s early-season dominance proved decisive. The title was secured before the lights went out in the season finale, allowing him to celebrate with victory doughnuts on the pit straight.

Rosberg has since noted that while Hamilton excels at lobbying team management, it was simply his year. The German’s timing, execution, and mental discipline delivered a championship that remains one of Formula 1’s most fascinating — and one that made his decision to walk away at the peak of his powers all the more unforgettable.
