The former Rangers midfielder could not believe what Durrant told him about the Ibrox faithful.

Ex-Rangers midfielder Nicky Law has explained via the Yorkshire Post how he doubted Ian Durrant’s claims about the Ibrox faithful’s high expectations.

But Law, who arrived at Rangers a year into their journey back from Scottish football’s bottom tier, admits he soon realised there was no exaggeration from Durrant, who was a coach at Ibrox at the time.

The 28-year-old left Rangers for Bradford City in the summer, linking up with another former Light Blues player and coach Stuart McCall, and has helped the Bantams to six wins and just one defeat from their opening 15 matches.

Despite proving hard to beat, the Yorkshire side’s penchant for draws is keeping them just outside of League One’s automatic places – and has prompted a slight restlessness among the Bradford support.

But, thanks to his experiences in Glasgow, Law, it seems, is able to keep a clear head.

“At Rangers, that [not being top of the league] would be a crisis,” he said, as quoted by the Yorkshire Post. “We had to win every week, particularly at Ibrox. The fans would turn up and there wasn’t really an atmosphere. Just a case of them saying: ‘We are here and expect the three points, then we go home’.

“Away from home was different, in that the fans got behind us that little bit more. But the expectation is massive up there, even this season now they are back in the Premier Division.

“Fans expected Rangers to win the league, even though it wasn’t probably too realistic this season. I remember Ian Durrant, one of the coaches at Rangers when I signed, telling me that if Rangers played Barcelona then the fans would expect a win – and Rangers were in the second division at that stage. That is how it is up there.

“I did think, ‘Surely not’. But I saw it for myself.”

Law is not a bad player to have around a promotion-cashing side, having gone up in two of his three seasons at Rangers and making the play-offs in the other.
