With the international break underway, HITC Sport looks at who the best goalkeepers have been in the Premier League so far in 2022/23 – including Nick Pope and Dean Henderson.
Goalkeepers were highly sought after in the transfer window this summer, with Pope and Henderson among 20 to be signed. Southampton spent the most on a new shot-stopper in June when they agreed a £12m fee with Manchester City for Gavin Bazunu, rising to £15m.

Newcastle United also paid £12m for Pope after capitalising on Burnley’s relegation to the Championship to land the England international. While Nottingham Forest agreed to cover Henderson’s £110k-a-week wages to hire the Manchester United ace on loan for one term.

Erik ten Hag allowed Henderson to head to the City Ground after the Reds’ promotion into the Premier League, having rarely played for the Red Devils last term. Between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, the 25-year-old featured in just three cup matches all season.
Not once did Henderson step foot onto the field for a Premier League fixture. But the one-cap England ace is again showing his top-flight goalkeeper credentials after his productive loan with Sheffield United in 2019/20, during which he took 13 clean sheets in 36 outings.
Henderson is among Premier League’s best goalkeepers for saves made so far in 22/23
Since joining Nottingham Forest in a straight loan deal, Henderson has proven to be one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers for saves made so far during the 2022/23 term. The 25-year-old has stopped 29 efforts over his seven appearances for one clean sheet to date.
Per SofaScore, only Pope and Brentford ace David Raya have recorded more saves with 30 each over seven games apiece. Everton star, and expected England No.1 at the World Cup, Jordan Pickford has recorded the fourth-most saves so far with 26 during six appearances.
Emiliano Martinez has made 22 saves for Aston Villa to rank as the fifth-most productive in the Premier League in the 2022/23 term. The Argentina No.1 is above Jose Sa, Danny Ward (21), Bernd Leno (20), David de Gea and Edouard Mendy (18) to finish off the top-10 so far.

Pope is among Premier League’s best goalkeepers for clean sheets so far in 22/23
Along with making the division’s joint-most saves so far this season, Pope is among the top goalkeepers for clean sheets with three. Only Ederson has more than new Newcastle No.1, with the Manchester City star taking four – whilst only forced into making just seven saves.
Sa of Wolverhampton Wanderers, along with Brighton & Hove Albion star Robert Sanchez and Arsenal ace Aaron Ramsdale also have three clean sheets. Whilst Hugo Lloris, Alisson Becker and De Gea have kept two, from 12 goalkeepers to have taken one shut out so far.
Pope is the best Premier League goalkeeper off his line in 22/23 so far
While Ederson has taken advantage of not being tested frequently to record the most shut outs in the Premier League so far this season, Pope has had to work hard for his. The Toon ace has also proven to be the top-flight’s best goalkeeper off his line in the opening games.
No goalkeeper over the Premier League has registered as many successful runs out as the Magpies star. Pope has taken possession with 10 darts off his line, above Henderson with eight, Alisson on seven, and Leno, Bazunu and Ward, who have been successful five times.
Pickford, Lloris, Ederson and Leeds United’s Illan Meslier have each taken possession from four of their runs out. That reflects a 100% success rate for Meslier, Lloris, alongside Ward, Bazunu, Leno, Alisson, Henderson and Pope. Ederson and Pickford have each failed once.

Martinez is the man when the ball is in the air so far in the 22/23 campaign
Martinez has proven to be the man you want between the sticks when the ball is in the air so far during the 2022/23 Premier League season. The 30-year-old has claimed possession with a division-high 11 high claims during seven games under Steven Gerrard at Villa Park.
His efforts in Birmingham narrowly better West Midlands rival Sa, with the Wolves star on 10. Pope and Raya have fallen just shy of double-digits thus far this term with nine, whilst Henderson, Lloris, Crystal Palace’s Vicente Guaita and Bazunu have each taken eight so far.
Neto has taken six high claims since the Brazilian joined AFC Bournemouth from Barcelona for free and replaced Mark Travers. Likewise, Leno – since joining Fulham from Arsenal for £8m – and West Ham United veteran Lukasz Fabianski have also registered six high claims.
Henderson has been the best goalkeeper when facing penalties this season
Henderson has been the best goalkeeper when facing penalties in the Premier League so far this season. The on-loan Manchester United man has stopped two attempts from 12-yards out for Nottingham Forest, ahead of Sa and Martinez as the only stoppers with one.
All three have saved 100% of the penalties they have met, with Neto the only other goalie than Henderson to face two. Pickford, Leno, Lloris, Alisson, Meslier, Fabianski, Ward and another West Ham star, Alphonse Areola, failed to stop the only penalties they have met.
