Chris Wood has posted on Instagram after it was confirmed he had joined Nottingham Forest initially on loan, but with an obligation worth £15m – and plenty have reacted, including Newcastle stars Nick Pope and Sven Botman.
Wood, 31, has spent a year on Tyneside after a £25million move to Newcastle from Burnley. He played his part in helping Newcastle avoid a relegation battle, with Callum Wilson out injured. He scored five goals in 39 appearances.
But with Newcastle pulling off a club-record move to sign Alex Isak, Wood has been reduced to third choice. That has convinced Wood to look for a move and Forest have moved – bringing him on loan, and a £15million obligation.
Ex-Leeds, Burnley and Leicester striker Wood has taken to Instagram to thank Newcastle as a club and the club’s supporters on Instagram. The fact he is on loan means he will not be allowed to face the Toon on March 18.
Wood joins Forest: Newcastle stars Pope and Botman react on Instagram
It is a move that suits all. Newcastle were seen as overpaying to bring in Wood – but ultimately, he did his job to keep Newcastle up – and, weakened a direct rival. They will get a decent fee of £15million, from their initial £25million.
For Forest, they get a striker that has huge experience in fighting relegation with Burnley. The kind of striker that Steve Cooper likes – given he has already brought in Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi. Wood gets game time.
At Newcastle, he was never going to get much, given Isak and Callum Wilson are ahead. He joins a Forest side where he has every chance of starting week in, week out. Botman and Pope were among those to respond.
Pope commented on the fact that Wood was leaving him for the second time in 12 months. Of course, Pope was with Wood at Burnley last season, before following him to Tyneside six months later – or, last summer.
