Nick Kyrgios has provided a fresh update on his injury status, having not played a competitive match since March.

The second set quickly slipped away, with Khachanov sealing a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 victory. Kyrgios has seen his career increasingly disrupted by injuries in recent years and is still working his way back to full fitness ahead of the US Open.

‘So it’s heartbreaking not playing, but even just being around the event… I’m doing a lot of work for the media and doing a lot of exciting things and I still feel like I can give a lot to the game of tennis.

‘Even if I’m not playing, you know, I can analyse it, commentate on it, and I really just enjoy being around it these couple of weeks.’

While Kyrgios hopes to be ready for the US Open, his return to competitive tennis remains uncertain as he continues to focus on his recovery.

What happened to Nick Kyrgios?

Kyrgios previously played his best Grand Slam tennis at these two tournaments in 2022, making it all the way to the final of the former, before another deep run in America.

Kyrgios lost the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic in four sets, displaying some remarkable fighty in the process.

He then returned to Grand Slam action at the following US Open, making the quarter-finals before losing to Karen Khachanov in five sets.

Kyrgios was also involved in plenty of memorable moments and controversies throughout 2022, headlined by a first-round defeat at Indian Wells. The Australian picked up multiple code violations for berating an umpire, fan, and journalist during a loss to Botic van de Zandschulp.

However, 2022 marked the last year he was able to get even a half-decent run of matches together.

In 2024, he didn’t return to the tour until June. He then beat Holger Rune in Stuttgart, before losing to Tommy Paul in the semi-final of the same event.

Since then, injuries have stopped him in his tracks and Kyrgios played just one round at Indian Wells match before being forced to retire against van de Zandschulp once again.

Kyrgios will be desperate to get his game back to the level it was at just a couple of short years ago so that he can enjoy life on tour and maximise his earnings before retirement.
