Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks is an economy player.

The former Arsenal forward has also compared Winks to Swansea City midfielder Tom Carroll.

Carroll started his professional club football career at Tottenham, but the 25-year-old could make only a handful of appearances in the Premier League for the North London club.

The former England Under-21 international midfielder joined wansea from Spurs in January 2017 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £4.5 million.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “The other issue for Spurs is that the squad isn’t strong enough and they have to rely on the youngsters coming through.

“Harry Winks is just like Tom Carroll, an economy player, and then Moussa Sissoko is a physical powerhouse but has nowhere near the technical ability to push the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.”

Is Charlie Nicholas right?

Winks is only 22 years of age, but the midfielder has already played more Premier League games than Carroll did for Tottenham.

Moreover, the England international has not gone out on loan, unlike Carroll, who had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers and Swansea during his time at Tottenham.

However, it cannot be denied that Winks is still quite far away from establishing himself in the Spurs first team.
