The Premier League side host lower league opponents for a place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that he is expecting Tottenham to claim a comfortable win over Gillingham in the third round of the EFL Cup, and suggested that the fixture could be the opportunity that Vincent Janssen has been waiting for.
Spurs are flying high in third in the Premier League table after picking up their third win of the campaign in Sunday’s clash with Sunderland at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane
However, the game was somewhat overshadowed by the ankle injury sustained by Harry Kane. And worryingly for the club’s supporters, Mauricio Pochettino has now confirmed that the side’s talisman suffered ligament damage and insisted that they were not going to suggest a return date for the striker (via BBC Sport).
But Nicholas feels that Kane’s injury should hand Janssen the ideal chance to open his account for his new club, having failed to score in his first seven appearances in all competitions.
Vincent Janssen
“Justin Edinburgh coming back to Spurs is an interesting one. His Gillingham side always have a go and I’ve always liked Edinburgh as a manager,” he told Sky Sports before explaining further why he is expecting Tottenham to claim a 4-1 win.
“It looks like Harry Kane is going to be out for some while, so this is an opportunity for Spurs to get Vincent Janssen in the goals, and perhaps get a few youngsters involved.”

By suggesting that he is expecting the Gills to look to get onto the front foot to try and surprise their top flight opponents, Nicholas is perhaps anticipating that Pochettino’s men will have plenty of gaps to exploit moving forward.
And thus, he is perhaps expecting Janssen – who scored 27 times in 34 Eredivisie games last season – to be the benefactor and put in a display that inspires his side through to the next round.
