Liverpool midfielder Fabinho believes Sunday’s trip to Arsenal offers Jurgen Klopp’s side a ‘good opportunity’ to close their gap to the teams at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds can move into the European places with a win after taking just 10 points in their opening seven games. Klopp’s squad have also failed to win either of their last two fixtures after securing their only wins of the term against AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Arsenal, on the other hand, cannot drop outside the top two no matter the result at home to Liverpool. The Gunners entered the weekend leading the league on 21 points after a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur created a four-point margin over their north London rival.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have only lost once in the Premier League so far this term. But the Reds trail the Gunners by 11 points entering their meeting after four draws, whilst the north Londoners have either won or lost. Arsenal also have the better attack and defence.

Mikel Arteta’s men have found the back of the net 20 times to eight goals conceded across their eight matches to date. Klopp’s, meanwhile, have hit home 18 goals in seven games to nine conceded. Only Manchester City (29) had scored more entering the weekend’s action.

Fabinho is excited by a ‘good opportunity’ as Liverpool prepare to visit Arsenal

Fabinho will hope to help Liverpool avoid letting Arsenal extend their advantage over the Anfield natives on Sunday. The 28-year-old will also be looking to take a ninth win over the Gunners in all competitions. He has beaten Arsenal and Marseille more than any team (8).

Of the 28-cap Brazil star’s wins over Arsenal, Fabinho has featured in three Liverpool wins at the Emirates Stadium. The Reds also won each of their last two trips 2-0 and sealed a 3-0 win in 2020/21. He last lost to the Gunners in the Premier League 2-1 back in July 2020.

The Liverpool anchor’s successes at the Emirates may be why Fabinho enjoys playing away to Arsenal. He also sees Sunday’s clash as a chance to show what the Reds can still deliver.

“[The] Emirates is a nice place to play and Arsenal, of course, are in a really good moment right now, playing really well, winning their games, top of the league,” Fabinho told the Liverpool website.

“It’s a good opportunity for us as well to show that we are Liverpool. We are still one of the best teams in this league. So, yes, it’s a good opportunity for us to get the three points and to close the gap on these teams as well.”

Fabinho continued to offer praise to Arsenal for their start to the season ahead of hosting Liverpool on Sunday. He added: “In the league, our next two games are against maybe the better two teams at the moment in the league, Arsenal and Man City.”
