Niall Quinn has told Sky Sports that Sunderland need to stay within touching distance of safety until January, and then invest in their squad.

And club legend Quinn now believes that the Black Cats’ best chance of surviving is to get through until January, and then sign a striker.
“I suppose to be in contention and to get to January and get into a good place and maybe get a player or two – a goalscorer in particular – is probably what he needs to do,” Quinn said.
“I hope it all clicks pretty soon but they’ve a lot of work to do and they’ve got to start spreading the goals about. Relying on Jermain Defoe, it’s going to be tough.”
Sunderland are currently two points away from safety, but they cannot afford to wait much longer for their first win.
The Black Cats have now played seven league matches this term, and they have only collected two points.
Sunderland’s next match comes after the international break against fellow strugglers Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium.
