Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fred is United’s second signing of the summer, and according to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Jose Mourinho is not done yet and is looking to bring in a new box-to-box midfielder.

While it will excite Manchester United fans to see Mourinho adding more quality in the centre of the park, one consequence may be less game time for promising academy graduate Scott McTominay.

The 21-year-old featured 23 times for Manchester United last season, becoming a trusted player under Mourinho, who was so pleased with the Scotsman that he created an award – ‘Manager’s Player of the Season’ – especially for him.

The signing of two new midfield players will surely impact on McTominay’s first-team opportunities.

A season on loan at a Premier League club would be excellent for the Scotland international’s development, and it has been reported that the Manchester United manager may be open to the idea.

While a loan deal could significantly help McTominay’s footballing education, staying at the club and developing under new coach Michael Carrick would certainly also be beneficial. McTominay and Manchester United will have to think carefully through what’s best for both player and club.
