Once again there has been speculation Manchester City would be happy to let the Bosnian striker go, but Dzeko is a quality player who should be given more of chance in the Premier League.
The striker has again responded this week to questions about his future at the club by saying he is going to stay and fight for his place.
A laudable sentiment, even if it is likely partly motivated by the generous wages he gets there, but why is there even suggestions he should leave?
Last season Dzeko was excellent, especially in the first part of the season when he got an extended run in the side. Despite his appearances not always being for the full 90 minutes, he picked up 19 goals in 42 matches, including a vital one against QPR on the final day.
This season too he has started well, with four in his first seven games. After his poor first few months at the club, when he struggled, as January signings often do, to come to terms with his place in the side, he has been scoring at more or less a goal every two games.
Is this not enough in a freescoring side like City, or is Dzeko simply not rated by Mancini?
To my eye Dzeko looks everything a striker needs to be. He is tall, strong and quick, and clearly able to put the ball in the back of the net.
The indications I see from his limited appearances for the first team suggest that if he was a fixture in the side, his already impressive scoring record would improve further. He is only 26, and if he were to stay in England you feel that there’s every chance he would be one of the league’s best strikers, so why are there suggestions City could let him go?
Their competition for places must be one reason. With Balotelli, Aguero and Tevez also in the squad Dzeko is always going to struggle to gain a consistent place. Also if Mancini does want to bring in another striker, one of those four would probably have to make way, but should Mancini be looking at another striker at all?
It was less than two years ago that Dzeko was rated as one of the best in Europe, scoring bucket loads at Wolfsburg, and he shows many of the qualities that served him well there when he plays for City, qualities that City shelled out £27 million for.
Before another £40-50 million is spent on a new striker, City would do well to give Dzeko a run in the side in case they end up selling a player with the potential to be amongst the very best strikers in Europe.
