Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick called time on his illustrious career at the end of last season and will be part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching team moving forward.

The 36-year-old spent 12 seasons at the club, winning 5 Premier League titles among other accolades, and was the club captain for the 2017/18 season.

His retirement leaves Mourinho with a decision to make about the identity of United’s next club captain.

Antonio Valencia served as the on-field captain for the majority of last season, and while the right-back appears the obvious choice the 32-years-old unlikely to be a long-term option.

If Mourinho is looking for a long-term option then he should consider Paul Pogba.

The 25-year-old has underwhelmed slightly since he joined as the ‘world’s most expensive player’ in the summer of 2016, in a deal worth £89 million.

The Frenchman has produced some brilliant performances for Mourinho’s side, most notably his brace in the 3-2 comeback win against Manchester City, and did wear the captain’s armband on a number of occasions last season.

Pogba has often looked like a leader on the pitch for United and the added responsibility of being made club captain may help the midfielder maximise his potential at Old Trafford.

Mourinho hasn’t always seen eye-to-eye with the French international but if managed right, giving him the armband could have positive consequences for both Pogba and the club.
