According to the Sun, Manchester United are considering a bid for Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri, who is interested in the move.

The Sun has reported that Jose Mourinho has been very impressed by the Swiss forward’s performances at the World Cup and would like to bring him to Old Trafford, with the 26-year-old available for just £12 million.

Shaqiri was one of Switzerland’s star performers in Russia, scoring a 90th-minute winner in their group game against Serbia and helping them to reach the round of 16.

The Swiss international has made 84 Premier League appearances for Stoke since he joined from Inter Milan in 2015, and has stated that he wants to stay in England’s top league.

The forward is undeniably talented and United do require another option on the right wing but, if Mourinho’s side want to compete with rivals Manchester City, they should surely be aiming higher.

United have been linked with moves for the likes of Gareth Bale, Willian and Ivan Perisic this summer and settling for Shaqiri, who is not on the same level of any of those three, feels a bit like defeat for the club, especially with the quality of City’s forward line.

United are the self-proclaimed biggest club in the world and are yet to make an offensive signing this summer, and although for £12 million Shaqiri is great value, if the North West club want to reclaim their seat at the top of English football they need to aim higher.
