Charlie Austin nodded in his 20th goal of the season in the midweek round of fixtures, and is consequently attracting interest from a plethora of clubs in the Premier League.
When Burnley striker Charlie Austin scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Leeds on Tuesday night he achieved his second major club record of the season. Having equalled Ray Pointer’s record from the 1958-59 season of scoring in eight games in a row with his brace against Bristol City, he is now the fastest man to score 20 goals in a season in the club’s history.
Austin has reached that mark in only 17 matches, eight fewer than the previous record held by Andy Lochhead. He is not only setting the standard for the Championship, Austin is the most prolific man in Europe at the moment, ahead of the likes of Messi, Falcao and Ronaldo. It has been a truly sensational start to the season, and the inevitable question now is how many more Austin can go on to get for Burnley this year?
Of course with this kind of form interest will come from the Premier League. Austin is only 23, and has now scored 74 goals in 132 games as a professional.
As his hot streak continues, more teams will be taking a look at Austin, with Arsenal reportedly joining Newcastle, Liverpool, Everton, Reading and Aston Villa in considering a bid. Whether Burnley and Austin would be open to move is a different question, and there is also the matter of whether Austin will be able to maintain this kind of form in the Premier League.
In recent times the strikers that have made the set up a division and continued to score regularly have stayed at the clubs they were promoted with, see Grant Holt and Rickie Lambert, and this is something Austin might consider if Premiership sides do bid for him.
Whatever the future holds however, fans should simply try and enjoy the present. Scoring twenty goals by the 6th of November is an unbelievable feat, and if Austin can sustain anywhere near that level all kinds of records will tumble at Burnley this year.
