‘He will walk next summer’: Some Newcastle United fans think Benitez will leave at the end of the season

The 58-year-old Newcastle United manger’s contract runs out in summer 2019.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez will not quit the club, despite financial continuing financial constraints.

The Spaniard steered Newcastle to a tenth place finish in the Premier League last season but has only been able to bring in three new players this summer due to a lack of available funds.

Midfielder Ki Sung-yueng joined on a free transfer from Swansea, defensive midfielder Mikel Merino joined from Borussia Dortmund for £7 million and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka joined from Sparta Prague for £4 million.

The Chronicle has reported that Benitez has admitted the club will need to sell players before they make any more improvements to their squad this summer.

It appeared that Newcastle fans would soon be free of controversial owner Mike Ashley when the Telegraph reported in March that he was renewing his efforts to sell the club, but a deal has yet to happen and the North West club face the prospect of being outspent by the majority of the Premier League.

Benitez has become a cult figure since he arrived at St James Park in March 2016, having stayed at the helm despite relegation in 2015/16, led the Toon to the Championship title and promotion the next year, and to a tenth played finish last year.

The Newcastle United boss’ contract runs out next summer, and Benitez is yet to sign an extension on his current deal.

A common feeling amongst Newcastle fans appears to be that Benitez will leave the club when his current contract is up and no one seems to hold that against him, with the anger largely aimed at Ashley
