Virginia pulled off a number of impressive saves and picked up a clean sheet in his Everton U23 debut earlier this week.

Portugal youth international goalkeeper Joao Virginia impressed in his Everton U23 debut Monday, leaving Blues’ fans excited about his future at the club.
The 18-year-old arrived at Goodison Park in the summer, making the switch from Arsenal and signing a three-year deal.
Virginia looked assured in his first appearance for the Toffees, making a number of important saves in the 1-0 victory over Leicester City U23s.
Such was the quality of the Portuguese’s performance that, according to the Liverpool Echo, he received a standing ovation when he entered the Everton dressing room following the final whistle, and drew some high praise from U23 boss David Unsworth.
Following the game, Unsworth said: “What he’s done tonight is set a standard I’ve not seen at this level from a goalkeeper.”

Everton have yet to name a third keeper for the senior side, but Virginia appears the favourite to take that role, despite 21-year-old Mateusz Hewelt being more experienced.
With Jordan Pickford and Maarten Stekelenburg already at the club, it seems unlikely the 18-year-old will see many first-team opportunities this season, but his impressive debut has caused excitement amongst fans on Twitter, with some suggesting he could play against Rotherham United in the EFL Cup.
