Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbed two goals, Mason Holgate struggled, but it was summer arrival Lucas Digne’s performance that will have grabbed his boss’s attention.
The left-back looked comfortable and confident in his first start in Everton colours, combining a sound defensive display with some brilliant attacking work.
The 25-year-old, who arrived from Barcelona on transfer deadline day, contributed the assist for the second goal, floating in a cross with his wrong foot for Calvert-Lewin to nod in at the back post.
Silva is now left with the difficult decision of whether to start Digne or club veteran Leighton Baines for Huddersfield’s visit to Goodison Park this weekend.
The 33-year-old made a strong start to the season under the new manager but was extremely poor against Bournemouth last weekend, looking suspect defensively and conceding the penalty that let the Cherries back into the match.
The Englishman has undoubtedly been a fantastic servant to the club, making over 400 appearances for the Toffees, and offers them great experience on the left side, but he is not the player he once was.
Digne’s performance on Wednesday night suggested that he should be Silva’s first-choice left-back based on quality alone, however, the Portuguese may want to give him some more minutes off the bench first.
Whether his full Premier League debut comes on Saturday or not, expect to see the French international become a regular fixture of the Everton side very soon.
