The Foxes have now won their last five games in a spell stretching back to mid-September, and sit second the Championship.
There have been a few false dawns at Leicester City over recent years. Having returned to the Championship in 2009 they finished in the play-offs the year after, and following a takeover by a Thai consortium in the following summer, they seemed destined to return to the Premiership.
However they have not repeated that success since, despite enlisting the services of Sven-Goran Eriksson. Nigel Pearson eventually replaced the Swede in late 2011, and has guided his team to an excellent start in the first ten games of the Championship.
The Foxes have won seven and lost three of the first ten matches, and have won the past five, including a 2-0 win away at high-flying Huddersfield. The club has also won every game at the King Power Stadium this season. David Nugent (incidentally still maintaining his goal a game record for the national side) has scored five this season, but the team have spread the goals around.
Nigel Pearson is refusing to get carried away, and described the win at the weekend as “an efficient performance as much as anything.” But supporters may not be so level-headed, the club has finished 10th and 9th in the past two years, giving a base they would hope to leap from this season, straight into the Premiership for the first time since 2004.
Despite their excellent form there has been speculation in the media that Harry Redknapp may be in line to take over from Pearson. However the past few days would seem to scotch those rumours.
The club’s owners have come out in support of Pearson, and the manager himself has dismissed the claims as preposterous saying,“somebody has been mischievous in the media.” It would seem odd that a manager would face any questions at all over his position in the midst of a winning run, so it could well just be media madness.
Whilst many clubs may be looking at the international break as a welcome respite, it’s come at a bad time for Leicester, keen as they must be to continue their excellent run, but Pearson has suggested that they will welcome the rest. If they can come out even stronger after the hiatus, Leicester could well find themselves in an automatic promotion place come the festive season.
