Athletico Madrid and Barcelona went 7 points clear in Spain, whilst Bayern’s lead was slashed to four points after Bayer Leverkusen ended their extraordinary winning run.

Germany: In the shock result of the weekend, Bayern Munich lost 2-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. It was the first time Bayern had dropped any points in the league, with Sidney Sam netting a 87th minute winner after Mandzukic had cancelled out Kießling’s opener for Leverkusen. Dortmund followed up their victory over Real Madrid with a 2-0 win in Freiburg, and Schalke overtook Eintracht Frankfurt to go second, four points behind Bayern, with a 1-0 win over Nurnberg. Frankfurt themselves lost 2-1 at Stuttgart. In a weekend of great comebacks around Europe, Monchengladbach came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Hannover.

Spain: Barcelona and Real Madrid each recorded 5-0 away wins, at Rayo Vallecano and Mallorca respectively, with Lionel Messi scoring his 300th senior goal for club and country. Athletico also won. 3-1 at home to Osasuna, to ensure they remain level on points with Barcelona at the top of the league. Real Madrid stay in fourth, but they are now only one point behind Malaga, who drew 0-0 at Espanyol in the first match of the weekend. Valencia’s awful season continued with a 1-0 loss at Real Betis to follow up a loss by the same score to Levante last week. Valencia now sit 11th in the table, with 11 points from 9 games.

Italy: Juventus and Napoli each won 1-0, against Catania and Chievo, so it’s as you were at the top of the league with Juve three points clear. Inter won 3-1 at Bologna to go third ahead of Lazio, who lost 2-0 at Fiorentina. Fiorentina are now in fifth only three points off Lazio. AC Milan picked up a 1-0 win at home to Genoa to lift them to twelfth in the league. The game of the weekend in Italy was also the last played, with Udinese coming from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2 in Rome with a Di Natale penalty in the 88th minute sealing the victory.

France: With the big match between Marseilles and Lyon postponed due to poor weather conditions, PSG took full advantage with a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal giving them a 1-0 win at last-placed Nancy, moving them three points clear at the top. Toulouse leapt into second with a 3-1 win at Brest. Lorient and Ajaccio played out an incredible 4-4 draw at Lorient. The hosts were 4-1 down at half time, but former Arsenal man Aliadiere scored a brace as they recovered to draw, with Sunu scoring the equaliser in the 94th minute.
