The Argentinian won the Coppa Italia under Benitez at Napoli in 2013/14 and has now been linked with Newcastle United.

Newcastle United will reportedly have to pay Swansea City £10 million if they are to sign defender Federico Fernandez this summer and, if he arrives, his previous relationship with Rafa Benitez could be invaluable.
According to ChronicleLive, Newcastle had attempted to bring the centre-back in on a loan deal but have been told the only way they to secure his services will be a permanent deal worth £10 million.
Following Florian Lejeune’s knee ligament injury, it appears Benitez is looking to strengthen the centre of his defence.
If the North East club were to pull the trigger and bring the Argentinian to Tyneside, his prior relationship with Benitez could be vital to ensuring his success.
Fernandez played under the current Newcastle boss at Napoli in the 2013/14 season, which was debatably the best of his career.
The central defender was an important part of Benitez’s side, making 36 appearances in a campaign that culminated in a Coppa Italia triumph.

Such were the quality of Fernandez’s performances that he earned himself a call-up to the Argentina 2014 World Cup squad and a £9 million move to Swansea later that summer.
With the season opener against Tottenham Hotspur just 12 days away, Benitez’s previous successful relationship with Fernandez, and his knowledge of the player both on and off the field, could be key in helping him settle quickly and having a positive impact at St James’ Park.
If Benitez can bring the 29-year-old to Newcastle and get him showing the sort of quality with which he played in the Coppa Italia winning season at Napoli, £10 million could prove great value.
