Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Walter Zenga, and are searching for a replacement.

Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed last week that manager Walter Zenga has lost his job after less than three months in charge.

Zenga, 56, took charge of just 17 games as Wolves manager, winning only six times in all competitions, four of which came in the Championship before he was shown the door.

Whilst much of his playing career was tied to Inter Milan during a lengthy spell with the Italian giants, his managerial career has been much more nomadic. Wolves were Zenga’s 16th managerial job in 18 years, and Fosun International have decided that it’s time for change already, handing Rob Edwards the reins for Saturday’s 1-1 draw away Blackburn.

Bookmakers have been busy pricing up odds for who could become the new Wolves manager over the last few days – and here are five of the most notable moves today, as compiled by Oddschecker.

Tim Sherwood: 47-year-old boss Sherwood has been out of work since losing his job at Aston Villa in October 2015, but could be making a return to the Midlands as his odds continue to be slashed for the Wolves job. He was at 12/1 on Sunday evening, yet tonight he’s remarkably been cut to as short as 11/4, making him one of the hot favourites for the Wolves job.

Aston Villa manager Roberto Di MatteoEx-Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo: Another former Aston Villa boss, Di Matteo was sacked earlier this month having won just one of his 11 Championship games in charge. The Italian’s career has been in decline since winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, and many felt it would be be hard for him to get back into management after his struggles at Villa. Tonight though, Di Matteo is in at 25/1 for Wolves, and whilst that’s something of a long shot, he’s at least in the conversation now.

Paul Lambert: The third ex-Aston Villa boss on the list, Lambert has been touted for the job since Friday, and his odds are really shortening tonight. The Scot may now have been very popular at Villa due to being perceived as ‘dour’ and producing some poor results, but he does have a promotion from the Championship to his name with Norwich City, and he’s as short as 5/4 for the Wolves job tonight.

Brentford manager Dean SmithBrentford manager Dean Smith

Dean Smith: A surprise name to emerge tonight, Brentford boss Smith has impressed since taking the job at Griffin Park in November of last year. A former Walsall player and manager, the West Bromwich-born manager knows the West Midlands and has suddenly entered the running at 20/1, making him something of a dark horse to replace Zenga.

Nigel Pearson: He’s been the favourite for a number of days now, and Pearson remains top of the pile tonight. A free agent having left Derby County at the start of the month, Pearson needs to rebuild his career, and may see Wolves as the ideal opportunity to do that after a turbulent spell with Derby. At 4/5 tonight, Pearson is the odds-on favourite to take the reins at Molineux.
