Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Walter Zenga.

Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed on Tuesday that manager Walter Zenga has lost his job after less than three months in charge.

Zenga, 56, took charge of just 17 games as Wolves manager, winning only six times in all competitions, four of which came in the Championship before he was shown the door.

Whilst much of his playing career was tied to Inter Milan during a lengthy spell with the Italian giants, his managerial career has been much more nomadic. Wolves were Zenga’s 16th managerial job in 18 years, and the Fosun Group have decided that it’s time for change already, handing Rob Edwards the reins for this evening’s 1-1 draw away Blackburn.

Bookmakers have been busy pricing up odds for who could become the new Wolves manager over the last few days – and here are five of the most notable moves today, as compiled by Oddschecker.

Alberto Bollini: Wolves may have just sacked one Italian manager, but now another has bizarrely been linked with the club. 50-year-old Bollini is currently serving as Gian Piero Gasperini’s assistant at Atalanta, having previously been in charge of Lecce. A former youth coach of Lazio, Sampdoria and Fiorentina, Bollini would be a strange choice for Wolves, but he’s in the running at 25/1 this evening.

Paul Lambert: Former Aston Villa boss Lambert is out of work right now having left Blackburn Rovers over the summer. The Scot remains highly thought of by many despite his dismal spell in charge of Villa, as promotion from the Championship with Norwich City in 2011 remains an impressive feat on his CV. Lambert may not be a ‘sexy’ appointment for Wolves, but he’s familiar with the Championship, and at 5/1, he appears to be one of the frontrunners for Wolves.

Mick McCarthy: McCarthy has already had one spell in charge of Wolves, taking charge of 270 games in almost six years at the helm, guiding Wolves to Premier League promotion in 2009. Now at Ipswich, McCarthy has endured a slow start to the season, and is now at 16/1 to make a shock return to Molineux, which may divide supporters.

Rob Edwards: Current caretaker Edwards, took charge of the club against Blackburn this evening, guiding his side to a 1-1 draw. The 33-year-old has no managerial experience, but spent four years at Molineux as a player, and has been on the coaching staff since 2014. The Welshman is now 6/1 to land the job on a full-time basis, making him one of the favourites right now.

Nigel Pearson: Despite a slight drift in his odds today, Pearson remains the favourite for the job. Out of work having left Derby County earlier this month, Pearson is evens to become the new Wolves manager and make an almost instant return to management. His acrimonious exit from Derby and poor results at the iPro Stadium mean that Pearson has some rebuilding to do, but having won promotion from the Championship in 2014 with Leicester City, he does have some recent success in this division.
