The Magpies are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 28 points from 29 matches, just two points above third-from-bottom Fulham, who have played 30 games.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are aiming to clinch promotion from League One to the Championship.
Lee Johnson’s side are currently third in the standings with 67 points from 36 games, just two points behind second-placed Peterborough United, who have played 37 games, and three points behind leaders Hull City, who have played 38 matches.
Sunderland won 1-0 against former Newcastle midfielder Joe Barton’s Bristol Rovers away from home in League One today.
