Two of Rangers most expensive summer signings were Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera.
There have been plenty of negatives surrounding Pedro Caixinha’s tenure as Rangers manager, with the lack of squad chemistry and decision to banish Kenny Miller being just two examples.
But as we delve deeper into the 2017-18 Scottish Premiership season, a number of his summer signings have fallen way below par during the first half of the season at Ibrox since putting pen to paper under Portuguese manager Caixinha.
Namely, Mexican duo Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera. The two attacking stars were meant to be the players Rangers turned to as the driving force behind the push to catch Old Firm rivals Celtic.
However, signing for a princely £3.5million, 27-year-old Pena has made just nine appearances all season with a struggle for fitness seemingly blocking him from making any inroads into the side.
Herrera, 29, has been in and around the first team, but has already lost his place to Alfredo Morelos, scoring only two goals in 12 league and cup encounters.
Now, the Daily Record claims the duo are earning a gigantic £40,000 a week between them, with both players on contracts in Glasgow until the summer of 2020.
Rangers’ next manager, whether that is Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes, current interim boss Graeme Murty or another of the many names linked with the vacancy, must consider selling a number of the Gers stars in January to reduce the size of the bloated squad.
With the money they’re earning, Herrera and Pena should be shipped out just six months after joining, as it would give the new boss money to spend in January as well as space to manoeuvre.
