Bookmakers Sky Bet have released odds on Middlesbrough’s manager on the first day of 2017-18.

Boro have been without a full-time boss since Aitor Karanka’s departure in March, with assistant Steve Agnew taking the reins on a caretaker basis.

Agnew has been unable to halt the Teessiders’ slide back to the Championship, however, and is unlikely to secure the role permanently, The Sun reported last week.

The 51-year-old [7/1] is only third on Sky Bet‘s list of likely candidates, behind out-of-work pair Nigel Pearson [4/1] and Ryan Giggs [11/10].

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner is next at 10/1, followed by Alan Pardew [14/1] and Steve McClaren [20/1], who are both unemployed.

Wagner has taken Huddersfield from relegation candidates to a win away from a play-off final appearance at Wembley in little over 18 months in charge of the Terriers.

However, the German-American could be interested in the Middlesbrough post should the Yorkshire side fail to overcome Sheffield Wednesday in this week’s semi-final second leg.

Former Manchester United midfielder and assistant boss Giggs is still awaiting his first full-time managerial role, whereas Pearson, Pardew and McClaren boast vast experience, at both Championship and Premier League level.

Pearson and McClaren should both be familiar to Middlesbrough fans, with the former having captained the Teessiders to two promotions and three cup finals between 1994 and 1998, while the latter won the 2004 League Cup and led them to the 2006 Uefa Cup final during a five-year spell in charge.

McClaren was spotted at Huddersfield’s semi-final home leg on Sunday, fuelling rumours he could become the Terriers’ new director of football.
