Leeds United flattered Carlos Corberan through showing an interest in the West Bromwich Albion coach replacing Jesse Marsch. But he rejected the chance to be their next manager.

That is according to the Daily Mail, which reports Corberan was flattered to be a candidate to replace Marsch. Yet the Spaniard will not return to Elland Road to fill the Whites’ vacant hot seat. He has, instead, put pen to paper on a new contract at The Hawthorns until 2027.

The 39-year-old elected to recommit to the Baggies to continue the project he only started in October. West Brom appointed Corberan to replace Steve Bruce in charge with the club 23rd in the Championship table. They only won two of their 16 games before he took over.

Yet West Brom now occupy a play-off spot in sixth place after winning 10 of their 13 games with Corberan. The Baggies also made it clear to the Spaniard that they believe he can seal their promotion to the Premier League this year and want him to lead a long-term project.

So strong is West Brom’s appreciation for what Corberan has achieved they moved quickly to thwart Leeds’ interest in him. Many within the Elland Road hierarchy, including Andrea Radrizzani, considered the Valencia native to be their top choice to take over from Marsch.

West Brom boss Corberan flattered to be in the mix to be the next Leeds manager

Leeds sought to appoint Corberan as their next manager before he signed a new deal with West Brom after sacking Marsch on Monday. But new Baggies chief executive Ron Gourlay convinced the former Whites U21 coach to stay at The Hawthorns after arriving last week.

Corberan was Leeds’ youth manager between 2017 and 2020, and also worked in Marcelo Bielsa’s backroom team. He left to take charge of Huddersfield Town and took them to the 2021/22 Championship play-off. Now West Brom hope he can take them one step further.
