Next Leeds manager: Iraola tells Rayo Vallecano view on replacing Marsch

Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola has now told the club that he wants to become the next manager of Leeds United. But the Spanish coach may not replace Jesse Marsch this week.

That is according to the Daily Record, which reports Iraola has asked Rayo Vallecano to let him take over Leeds. The Elland Road natives are still seeking a new head coach after firing Marsch on Monday. Michael Skubala took charge of their 2-2 draw at Manchester United.

Leeds view Iraola as their top choice to become the Whites’ next manager and third in one year. Director of football Victor Orta also flew out to Madrid on Tuesday to start talks with Iraola. He returned to England for the club’s trip to Old Trafford but he remains in contact.

Orta is hopeful of trashing out a compensation package with Rayo Vallecano to see Iraola become the next Leeds manager. The 40-year-old is also keen to take charge of a Premier League team. But Andrea Radrizzani could walk away if Los Franjirrojos demand too much.

Iraola is out of contract at the Estadio de Vallecas at the end of this season following three campaigns in charge. Yet Rayo Vallecano have held talks with the Usurbil native over a new deal. He led Los Franjirrojos to promotion in his first term and they are now fifth in La Liga.

Rayo Vallecano can demand a high fee to let Iraola be the next Leeds manager

Given the successes Iraola has enjoyed at the Estadio de Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano will want sizeable compensation to let the Spaniard become the next manager of Leeds. So Orta and Whites owner Radrizzani may now have to wait until next week to confirm his appointment.

Leeds hoped to name Marsch’s successor by Sunday when Manchester United visit Elland Road in a reverse of Wednesday’s match. But Union Rayo reports that Los Franjirrojos are calm about the chances of Iraola leaving as he has a €10m (£9m) release clause in his deal.

Rayo Vallecano are very loath to see Iraola, who La Liga expert Phil Kitromilides believes is an ‘excellent candidate’, leave. They sit fifth in La Liga and just three points outside of the Champions League places after 20 matches. Iraola has overseen nine wins and five draws.
