Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has promised Football London that Joe Rodon will be playing in his side’s next match.

Rodon was given a chance to feature from the off for Tottenham against Liverpool, but he did not cover himself in glory during the contest.

The £11 million Welsh defender (BBC Sport) was at fault for Liverpool’s third goal in Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat, as he failed to clear a routine cross, which allowed Sadio Mane to crash home from close range.

But Mourinho saw enough from the 23-year-old to suggest that he was an option which was worth sticking with.

“Next game he plays for sure. Showed good personality. Went for duels, not a coward for going for every duel even against the players they have,” he said.

“Played very very well and made just one mistake. For me if I have a player that makes only one mistake in a very good performance then we have to support him.”

Mourinho spoke just yesterday about how he felt Rodon wasn’t the finished article, but had plenty of potential, and last night’s performance highlighted that.

Rodon had some really impressive moments, particularly in the first-half, when he made a great last ditch tackle to stop Mane from scoring.

However, the Tottenham summer signing showed why he still has a lot to learn, when he failed to clear Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.

Spurs’s next game comes against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, when they will now be under pressure to get back to winning ways.
