Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been named as a potential successor to Wayne Rooney as England captain.

Speaking ahead of a friendly with Germany and a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate said Kane possessed the qualities to be the next person to wear the armband after the Manchester United skipper.

“Harry has definite leadership qualities,” Southgate was quoted by the Mirror.

“He’s a very determined, single-minded individual, completely dedicated to improving and he’s having another outstanding season.

“He is in his third season now of playing at a very high level and getting high numbers of goals. It’s great.”

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, Red Devils defender Chris Smalling and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling were also identified as potential future captains by Southgate.

The conversation has started after Rooney failed to make the latest England squad due to a knee injury. With the 31-year-old having also struggled for a regular starting place at club level this season, it seems his international career may be coming to an end.

Whether Kane would be the right man to succeed him remains open to debate, with Hugo Lloris the preferred choice at Spurs currently.

The striker is also a relatively new face on the England scene as well, with his 17 caps significantly behind those amassed by Lallana, Smalling and Sterling – who all have 29.
