The Newcastle United striker has set himself a goals target for this season.

Newcastle’s new signing Yoshinori Muto spoke to reporters before completing his £9.5m move to St James’ Park from Mainz, and shared how he is targeting 10 goals this season, as quoted by the Mag:

“I believe I’ll grow as a player if I put myself in a competitive environment. My goal is to net 10 goals, a number I haven’t reached during a season (outside of domestic football in Japan).”

Muto, 26, is still yet to be officially confirmed as a Newcastle player, as he awaits work permit clearance, but the Toon seem confident that a deal will be done.

And presuming that the Japanese star does receive clearance to play in the Premier League, much will be expected of him in the famous black and white stripes.

So surely a target of 10 goals is rather underwhelming, considering the fact that he is being billed as Rafa Benitez’s saviour.

Muto is quick along the ground, and is a competent finisher. He is someone who should thrive on the service that he will be provided with at St James’ Park, and there is no reason why he should not be targeting at least 15 goals for Newcastle this season.

Quite how many goals Rafa will expect from his new signing is unknown, but the Spaniard will surely not be happy if the Japan international does bag just 10.

Muto might be better served in being slightly more optimistic, and see how far that takes him.
