Newcastle United reportedly want Empoli’s Miha Zajc.

Newcastle United have to be thrifty in the transfer market this month, with Rafael Benitez yet again working with a small transfer budget at St James’ Park.

The Magpies need to strengthen in a host of positions, and a key priority for Benitez will be to find another playmaker as talks over a move for Miguel Almiron have died down of late.

Calciomercato threw a new name into the hat over the weekend, reporting that Newcastle are keen to snap up Empoli midfielder Miha Zajc this month.

Zajc, 24, is understood to be keen on a move away this month, and at a maximum of £5.4million, he shouldn’t break the bank for Newcastle if Benitez launches a move for the Slovenian international.

However, Newcastle may have been presented with the ideal part-exchange deal, as Tuttomercatoweb claim that Empoli are keen to snap up Magpies misfit Achraf Lazaar this month.

Newcastle would love to offload the Moroccan this month as he is clearly out of favour under Benitez, having failed to make a single appearance this season.

Being able to offload him to Zajc in a part-exchange deal, bringing down the price for the midfielder whilst getting shut of an unwanted player is pretty much ideal for the Spaniard.

If Newcastle really do want Zajc, then they should certainly explore such a deal, potentially freeing up cash for other signings in the coming weeks.
