The Newcastle United forward could be a useful addition to the Rangers squad in the summer.

Gers boss Pedro Caixinha has his work cut-out if he to turn his underperforming side into title contenders next term, and he will surely be looking to make a whole host of summer acquisitions to bolster his squad.

The problem for Rangers is that there are limited funds available with which to spend, so the Portuguese will have to be smart in his recruitment.

The Ibrox outfit should certainly keep an eye on the free transfer market, with plenty of bargains available during the off-season.

One interesting target for the Gers would be Magpies forward Sammy Ameobi. The 25-year-old was on loan with League One side Bolton Wanderers, before returning to St James’ Park for the second half of the season.

He can play anywhere along the front-line, and has pace in abundance, along with superb technical ability.

He has a lot to prove after failing to truly establish himself in England with Newcastle, and Ibrox could be the ideal place for him to showcase his real potential.

Caixinha’s men have scored just 49 goals in 34 Scottish Premiership outings this term – 14 less than Aberdeen and an astronomical 43 fewer than Celtic.

That is an area that quite clearly needs improvement, and with Ameobi’s guile and direct playing style, he would most certainly inject a particular kind of potency that the Gers have been desperately bereft of this season.

The Daily Record claimed earlier this week that the Rangers boss wants to bring up to 12 new players to Ibrox this summer, and the acquisition of the Newcastle forward would be an ideal place to start.
