Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United have struggled for goals in the Premier League – but Vasco da Gama forward Marrony might not have changed things.

Two months ago, Newcastle United’s head of recruitment was packing his bags and boarding a flight to Brazil. The reason? Well, according to Globo Esporte, Steve Nickson was on a personal mission to check out Vasco do Gama forward Marrony.
And, just 24 hours later, The Chronicle backed up the claims from South America, stating that Marrony would choose to join Newcastle ahead of a potential move to Portugal. He has a £31 million release clause in his contract but, worry not Mike Ashley, the youngster will apparently be sold for far less than that.
At just 20 and with his best years ahead of him, Marrony is the typical Ashley signing. Did anyone say ‘re-sale value’? But, for whatever reason, nothing came of this initial interest with Newcastle instead focusing on Joelinton and Andy Carroll.
Perhaps a move to the Premier League was simply viewed as too much too soon for the Rio-born starlet. This could be a deal that Newcastle will revisit in January or perhaps next summer.

But if Marrony wants to follow in the footsteps of Joelinton, Kenedy and Mirandinha, he’ll have to do a lot better than he is right now.
Marrony currently has one goal in his last 30 games (21 of those coming this season). Flitting between a role on the left and through the middle, he’s now scoreless in ten matches with Vasco da Gama stuck in mid-table. Newcastle fans will be getting serious Miguel Almiron vibes and not for a good reason.
Marrony has time to turn things around and he’ll need to, fast, if he wants to join Joelinton at Newcastle in 2020.
