Newcastle United have reportedly stepped up their search for a striker ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle’s scouts have been looking at a number of strikers across Europe in the last few weeks as the Magpies consider their targets for the January transfer window.

Rafa Benitez’s men appear to be in some trouble this term. After another uninspiring window in the summer, Newcastle find themselves in the relegation zone in the Premier League still awaiting their first win of the season.

Their main problem in recent weeks has undoubtedly been finding the back of the net. They have scored just six goals in their opening 10 games, and have failed to score in four of their last five fixtures.

But it appears that the club may be hoping to address that situation in January. The Chronicle reports that several strikers across Europe have been watched in the last two or three weeks, with the shortlist set to be drawn up next month.

The report adds that it is not clear what Benitez’s budget is likely to be in January just yet. But it does appear that the Spaniard may need to pull a rabbit out of the hat as it appears that it could be a long wait for the winter window to open.

And while some supporters may be sceptical about how likely a spending spree is given the club’s track record, Ashley may have no other option but to loosen the purse strings if they remain in trouble over the next couple of months.
