A recent report from the Chronicle suggested that Newcastle plan to target some loan deals this summer as Rafa Benitez looks for the best way to use his transfer budget ahead of their Premier League return.

One of the players who has reportedly been on the Magpies’ radar lately is Fabian Delph, according to a report from Guardian from last month.

However, Newcastle may have feared that signing Delph may have taken a significant bite out of their transfer budget following Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola’s positive comments about the midfielder’s attitude and performance in the wake of their defeat to Chelsea (via City’s official website).

But while the Citizens may have been hesitant about letting the former Leeds trainee go permanently unless they received an incredible offer, perhaps a loan deal may be a lot more appealing for Guardiola.

The 27-year-old has started just three games in the top flight across the last two seasons, so it would not be a surprise if Guardiola was still unsure about whether Delph featured in his long-term plans.

Joining Newcastle on loan would surely see the England international earn many more chances, thus giving him the platform to potentially prove himself fully to the Spaniard.

And given his struggles with injury over the last few years, the Magpies would be securing a deal with considerably less risk by recruiting Delph for just the season.

And if he enjoys a brilliant campaign, but Guardiola is still unable to fit him into the team then Rafa Benitez’s men have built up the relationship with the midfielder that may give them an advantage if City are willing to cash in on him.
