Newcastle United new-boy Matt Ritchie has highlighted his side’s 6-0 win over Queens Park Rangers earlier this week as justification for his move from the Premier League to the Championship, as reported by the Northern Echo.

Despite dropping down a division, the former Bournemouth man believes he made a step in the right direction for his career, and told the Northern Echo how Tuesday night’s convincing win is an example of why he made the right decision:

“The experience of the game at QPR was the reason I came to Newcastle. I want to have nights like that, and I want to have success and try to be part of something special at the football club.”

The 27-year-old Scotland international is one of just six Newcastle players to have featured in every league game thus far, and he highlighted the importance of the Magpies’ strong defence as they continue their climb up the table:

“A lot of credit has to go to the back four. We scored six goals, but the most important thing was that we kept another clean sheet. That’s a key thing in this league – keeping clean sheets.”

The North-East outfit’s five game winning streak in the Championship has taken them to second in the table, in what has been an impressive turnaround after a slow start to their campaign.

Newcastle face Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park on Saturday, where a victory could take them to the Championship summit, should Huddersfield fail to beat Queens Park Rangers.
