Matt Ritchie has accused Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson of “gamesmanship” during a post-match interview with BT Sport, after Newcastle United earned an excellent 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s men.

Sergio Aguero continued his excellent goalscoring rate against Newcastle, before Salomon Rondon equalised in the 66th minute. With the game on a knife edge, Newcastle were awarded a penalty late on.

Fernandino’s lapse in concentration saw Sean Longstaff steal in before being fouled by the Brazilian, and Ritchie had the chance to score from the spot and secure a shock result at St. James’ Park.

But Ederson looked to increase the pressure on Ritchie by dragging out the time between the penalty being awarded, and Ritchie actually taking the spot kick by claiming he had suffered a knock. Ritchie criticised Ederson after the match.

“I was going to place it, but he [Ederson] took so long, I decided to smash it. It went in the net so I’m happy. I think so,” Ritchie said, when asked if Ederson was guilty of gamesmanship. “But I tried to stay focused. Luckily enough it went in.”

A different aura surrounded St. James’ Park after the full-time whistle, with the club potentially about to smash their club-transfer record. BBC Sport claim Newcastle are about to sign Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United for £20million.

The win against Guardiola’s side also changed the atmosphere on Tyneside, with it previously subdued thanks to owner Mike Ashley’s ownership of the club.

The Telegraph also claim that Newcastle are to sign Antonio Barreca and Andreas Samaris on loan from AS Monaco and Benfica, respectively. Climbing to 14th place, Newcastle are next in action against Tottenham on Saturday.
