Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has revealed to The Times that he spoke to former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel before moving to the Premier League.

Dubravka joined Newcastle from Sparta Prague in January 2018 on loan until the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Magpies secured the services of the 30-year-old Slovakia international goalkeeper on a permanent contract in the summer of 2018.

Skrtel played in the Premier League with Liverpool from 2008 until 2016 and worked with current Newcastle manager Benitez at Anfield.

Dubravka has revealed that he spoke to Skrtel about moving to the Premier League, and what the 34-year-old Slovakian defender – now at Fenerbahce – told him.

Dubravka told The Times: “It was difficult to leave Sparta. That was my team. Obviously if you have the chance to play in the Premier League you take this opportunity.

“I spoke to Martin Skrtel. He said go, great fans, amazing city and great stadium. He only said positive things about the gaffer.”

Staving off relegation

Newcastle are 14th in the Premier League table at the moment with 35 points from 31 matches.

The Magpies are as many as seven points above the relegation zone, and it looks very likely that Benitez’s side will stave off the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of the season.
