Dean Ashton believes Joelinton will feel ‘embarrassed’ after his ‘terrible’ miss as Newcastle United beat Southampton. But the Brazilian bounced back to net the Toon’s winning goal.
The Magpies left the Saints this Tuesday with a 1-0 lead after the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Joelinton (73’) struck home at close range from Alexander Isak’s cross after the Swedish striker spun Duje Caleta-Car. Yet it was third time lucky for Joelinton to score.
Newcastle thought Joelinton had put Eddie Howe’s squad in front on the south coast in the 39th minute. The forward stayed alert inside the box to slam home after Gavin Bazunu had denied Joe Willock and Mohammed Salisu also blocked Callum Wilson but it did not count.

Referee Stuart Attwell felt Wilson had fouled Salisu before Joelinton got his effort out. The forward would also spurn an even easier chance in the 53rd minute. Miguel Almiron burst past Salisu on the wing and cut the ball into the area only for Joelinton to send a shot over.
Joelinton had an empty net to aim at from six yards out at St Mary’s but spooned his strike over. But whatever embarrassment the Brazilian felt would only last 20 minutes as he got the winning goal. It was his fourth of the season so far after 24 outings in all competitions.

Joelinton stunned Ashton with the Newcastle star’s ‘terrible miss’ vs Southampton
Joelinton has offered two of his goals and two assists over 18 Premier League appearances this season. He has also hit home twice and assisted one goal over five outings in the EFL Cup. The Brazilian had scored and assisted in the quarter-finals to edge Leicester City 2-0.
Each of his four goals and two assists have also come from the left-wing having returned to an attacking position. Joelinton laid on one assist from midfield back on the opening day of the Premier League term. But Howe has mainly used him as a forward again since October.
Yet Joelinton stunned former West Ham United and England striker Ashton with his miss in their Carabao Cup clash, before going on to net Newcastle’s winning goal at Southampton.
“He’ll have that horrible feeling with that wry, embarrassed face,” Ashton said on talkSPORT (24/01, 21:19). “Any professional footballer should just side-foot this in! He’s in front of goal, he lashes at it and it’s a terrible miss!”
