Whoever is in charge of West Ham next season faces a huge task, with a plethora of top level signings needed, if they are to go on and enjoy a successful campaign next term.

Their top flight status is far from assured this season, with just two points separating them from 18th placed Southampton.

One particular area of concern for the Hammers will be their central defensive department, and according to the Sun, they are targeting a £15 million summer swoop for Newcastle ace Jamaal Lascelles.

Whilst the 24-year-old is an able performer, he would be the latest in a long line of underwhelming signings from West Ham, and it could be argued that he is not better than what David Moyes currently has at his disposal.

Lascelles moved to St James’ Park from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014, before being immediately loaned back to the east Midlands outfit.

He has performed consistently ever since then, but there is nothing that jumps out about the centre-back that will get Hammers fans excited regarding links with the Magpies man.

It could also be argued that Lascelles is no better than the likes of Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna, whilst his arrival at the club would also have a detrimental effect on Declan Rice and Reece Oxford’s hopes of first-team football.

The Newcastle man is a decent payer, but one who West Ham should not be prioritising this summer.
