Newcastle’s Jack Colback told he has no future; still gets on well with Benitez

The Newcastle United midfielder has failed to make a single appearance for the club this season.

After being told that he was not part of Rafa Benitez’s plans in the summer, it would have been easy for Jack Colback to take his foot off the gas, and ease up, but Peter Beardsley insisted that he has been nothing other than a great example for the club’s youngsters, when speaking exclusively to the Shields Gazette.

The 27-year-old joined Newcastle from bitter rivals Sunderland on a free transfer in the summer of 2014, and was a regular feature for the Toon, making 102 appearances in all competitions.

He has not played a single game for Benitez’s side this term, however, and has been demoted to play and train with the club’s under-23 side, which is run by Geordie legend Beardsley.

And Beardsley praised Colback to the hilt, when speaking exclusively to the Shields Gazette, highlighting how much of an important role the 27-year-old has played in helping develop the club’s younger players:

“He’s been really good. He’s been good as gold. To be fair to Rafa, he’s been good with him. They still get on well. It’s nothing to do with me why he’s not been part of the first-team group, but, to be fair to Jack, he’s been a good example to the kids. At our level, he stands out. Most first-team players would. The best players are the best players for a reason. He’s been really good for us.”

If the left-footed midfielder continues to shine for the under-23’s, and showcase his genuine commitment to the cause, it would be foolhardy for Benitez not to offer him a route back into the first-team fold.

Colback still has just over 18 months remaining on his current deal at St James’ Park, so there is still plenty of time for him to prove his worth to the Spaniard.
