Liverpool now seem to be the favourites ahead of Newcastle to sign Iker Casillas from Porto.

Liverpool could make a move for Iker Casillas this summer, according to Spanish publication Mi Otra Liga, with the goalkeeper set to leave Porto.

Casillas is out of contract at the end of this season and while there is the option to extend his stay at the Estadio do Dragao, it seems a switch to the Reds could be tempting for the 36-year-old.

Newcastle out of the picture?

This could come as a blow to Newcastle United, whom Talksport claimed earlier this month were interested in signing Casillas themselves.

The veteran had actually left boyhood Real Madrid for Portugal when Magpies manager Rafa Benitez took over as boss at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2015, but the Spaniard is still interested in his fellow countryman.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, this latest report says that Casillas would be particularly tempted by a move to Anfield because of the ability to extend his already impressive Champions League record.

The ‘keeper has made 171 appearances in the competition – more than any other player – and could increase that under Jurgen Klopp, but is unlikely to do so in the near future at St James’ Park.
