The Newcastle United full-back was sensational against the Reds.

Newcastle United signed a rough diamond when they bought DeAndre Yedlin from Tottenham Hotspur, but on Sunday the USA international looked to have come of age.

The right-back was amazing against the Reds, battling superbly against Liverpool’s dynamic attacking players, most notably Sadio Mane, and proving he has what it takes to become one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.

Newcastle fans, as with Tottenham supporters before them, knew Yedlin had pace to burn, but his defensive performances have not always been quite as impressive.

On Sunday everything came together perfectly and it will be interesting to see if the defender maintains this fine form when Newcastle take on Southampton directly after the latest international break.

The 24-year-old was always going to take time to settle in a new country, but it has perhaps taken longer than expected for Yedlin to grow into the fine full-back he was tipped to be off the back of an impressive World Cup almost four years ago.

Whatever the reason for his stagnation, Newcastle now look to benefit from his undoubted ability, and anyone who can keep Liverpool’s free-scoring forwards at bay deserves credit.

After what was arguably his best performance in a Newcastle shirt, Yedlin’s confidence will be sky high, and long may it stay there.
