Aleksandar Mitrovic has suggested that he hopes to remain at Newcastle beyond the summer transfer window, vowing that there is more to come from him, the Daily Mail reports.

Mitrovic appears to divide the Magpies supporters more than any other player in the squad, and endured a difficult season in the Championship last term, scoring just four times in 25 appearances for the side.

But the Serbia international insisted that there is much more to come from him if he stays at St James’ Park – which, he confirmed that he hopes to do – and reminded those fans who doubt him that he was only 20 when he completed a £13 million move (via BBC Sport) from Anderlecht.

“I came here very young for a big transfer fee, I think people can forget that,’ he said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“But look, I scored nine goals in my first season in the Premier League, in one of the worst teams which was relegated. That is not bad.

“The Premier League is the hardest in the world. I think I am getting stronger, cleverer and knowing how to play this league.

“I hope the decision is taken so I can stay here. I have to show so much more to the people in England. My best years are still to come.”

As Mitrovic suggested, his return of nine goals in his first Premier League season was certainly not bad at all but was overshadowed by the fact that the side were relegated from the top flight.

And while some supporters may perhaps not be particularly disappointed if Rafa Benitez does move him on, the current state of the squad should surely tempt the Spaniard to give the forward another chance at the highest level.

Newcastle simply do not have the numbers in the striker department to allow one of their forwards to leave during this window, and with Mitrovic previously faring well in the top flight, many fans will surely be hoping that he is given the chance that he craves.
