Before last season, Newcastle United’s previous Championship title win came back in 2010.
As Newcastle continue their preparations for their Premier League return following their Championship title win, HITC Sport has taken a look back at the side that led the Magpies to their previous second tier title win seven years ago.
Here is the team that started on the final day of the 2009/10 season…
GK: Steve Harper
Steve Harper spent around two decades on Newcastle’s books before leaving for Hull in 2013. He finished his career with a brief spell at Sunderland. He now coaches the Magpies’ academy goalkeepers.

RB: Danny Simpson
Danny Simpson made more than 100 league appearances for Newcastle. He left for Queens Park Rangers in 2013 before joining Leicester one year later. He would become a Premier League winner in 2016.
CB: Mike Williamson
After leaving Newcastle in 2016, Mike Williamson joined Wolves. An injury-plagued spell at Molineux ended earlier this year.
CB: Fitz Hall
Fitz Hall was only on loan from QPR when Newcastle went up. He joined Watford in 2012 before leaving in 2014.
Jose Enrique
LB: Jose Enrique
Jose Enrique’s Newcastle career would end in 2011. However, his move to Liverpool did not exactly go to plan. He last played for Real Zaragoza.
RM: Joey Barton
Joey Barton played for QPR and enjoyed two stints with Burnley either side of a short-lived spell with Rangers. His return to Turf Moor came to an end this summer after he was handed a long-term ban.
CM: Danny Guthrie
Danny Guthrie was a star of the Championship-winning team, but seemed to do little for the Magpies after. He joined Reading in 2012. He is now a free agent after his two-year stay at Blackburn ended this summer.
Danny Guthrie
CM: Alan Smith
Alan Smith would also stay until 2012, subsequently joining MK Dons. He now plays for Notts County, for whom he has previously served as caretaker manager also.
LM: Wayne Routledge
Wayne Routledge has spent the last six years with Swansea, making over 200 appearances for the Swans in all competitions since leaving St James’ Park in 2011.
AM: Kevin Nolan
Kevin Nolan also left Newcastle in 2011. After a great spell with West Ham, he has spent time with both Leyton Orient and Notts County, serving as player-manager at both. He remains with the latter.
ST: Andy Carroll
A surprise move to Liverpool in 2011 never worked out for Andy Carroll. He has enjoyed a little bit more success with West Ham, but his spell with the Hammers has still been injury plagued.
